  18.   The FreeType engine is a free and portable TrueType font rendering
  19.   engine, available in  ANSI C and Pascal source  code.  It has been
  20.   developed to  provide TT support  to a great variety  of platforms
  21.   and environments.

  23.   Notice that  FreeType is a *library*.   It is *not*  a font server
  24.   for your  preferred environment, even though it  has been designed
  25.   to  be the  basis of  many  high-level libraries,  tools and  font
  26.   servers.

  28.   It's  a clean-room  implementation that  is not  derived  from the
  29.   original  TT engine developed  by Apple  and Microsoft,  though it
  30.   matches it  regarding rendering  quality.  To our  knowledge, it's
  31.   the only royalty-free complete TrueType engine available.

  33.   Version 1.1  fixes several bugs found  in 1.0, as  well as provide
  34.   the engine  with enhanced capabilities, like  support for vertical
  35.   metrics.
